Philip Mantione - BIO/CV













Philip Mantione’s music has been described as “austerely impressive” (Paris Transatlantic Monthly Nov. 2000) and Innova Recordings calls his Sinusoidal Tendencies, “a searing study in form and color.” Zane Fischer, of the Santa Fe Reporter, called his interactive sound sculpture, "...a satisfying, interactive rabbit hole, in which tactility becomes sound." He has written music for multimedia performance, experimental video, computer interactive projects, sound installations, and acoustic pieces for orchestra, string quartet, brass quintet, woodwind quintet, piano trio and other chamber ensembles. Recent performances in Santa Fe include, The Human Resistor, a performance on an instrument created from hacked consumer electronics at the Santa Fe Complex, and T = 2.7K, a multimedia performance at the Center for Contemporary Art. In 2006, he completed a new piece called "B", commissioned by Thomas Buckner for baritone voice, string quartet, percussion and computer to be premiered in New York City. In 2005, the S.E.M. Ensemble, conducted by Petr Kotik, performed his Traffic for strings at Merkin Hall in NYC and the Willow Place Auditorium in Brooklyn Heights. AcGtr, a computer music piece was included in the Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Art (2005) at the University of Minnesota. His chamber piece, Assemblage, was broadcast live on KUSC from the Bing Theater at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. A computer music piece called Five was included in the Medi@terra Festival 2001 (microMuseum), a traveling exhibition beginning in Greece, moving throughout the Balkans and ending in Germany. His recordings have been heard internationally on new music radio and the web including: Feedback Monitor (Toronto, Canada), Future Static (Bellingham, WA), Brain Ticket Death (Dearborn, MI), Martian Gardens (Amherst, MA), No Other Radio Network (Pacifica)(Berkeley, CA) Inner Space (Croatia), Sonar Map (Seattle), Vast Field (not to scale) (Pacific Grove, CA), FOLDOVER (Oberlin, OH), The Ways and Mistaken Pathways (Lithuania), Delusions and Furies (Dearborn, MI), Fresh Ears (Minneapolis,MN) art@radio (Baltimore, MD),Virtual Concert Hall (Aspen, CO), Difficult Listening (Perth, Australia) and on-line at the Canadian Electro-acoustic Community’s web site (CEC). In 2000, his Sinusoidal Tendencies was released by Innova Recordings on the Sonic Circuits VIII compilation CD of electro-acoustic music. The CD-ROM version of Sinusoidal Tendencies was included in the European Media Arts Festival (Osnabrück, Germany), Immedia 1901 Festival at Michigan University (US) and is included in a CD-ROM Salon organized by Foro Artistico in Hannover, Germany.

He has collaborated with visual artist Alysse Stepanian on numerous projects including performance, installation and experimental video. L.P. Streitfeld, art critic and writer for the New York Times and The Advocate & Greenwich Times, has described their work as “a wry and profound commentary on the conflicted state of America's emotions.“ In 2006, they created two new installations at The Islip Art Museum in New York and Imagine Gallery in Beijing, China. They have exhibited internationally including recent screenings at the Imagine Gallery Residency in Beijing; Art in General, Here, Dixon Place, Void, Ocularis, and Columbia University in NYC; Most Significant Bytes 2000 (Ohio); The Shy Anne Sound and Video Festival (Washington); Sonic Circuits Circus (Minnesota); Fig and Jan Baum Galleries (LA); The Leeds International Film Festival (UK), HAY-ART Cultural Center and The Armenian Center for Contemporary Experimental Art (Armenia); on-line at wigged.net; the SEAMUS (Society for Electro-acoustic Music in the US) 2001 Festival at LSU; and the Paris/Berlin International Meetings organized by roARatorio (2000 and 2003). In 2001, their multimedia work liveReal, with live performance, video, computer animation and computer music was broadcast live on MNN (Manhattan Neighborhood Network cable TV) and on the web from DCTV (Downtown Community Television) in NYC. In 2004 they created an interactive installation called Drainage, with video, sound, sculpture and gravity-driven mechanics, which was shown from May to September at Collaborative Concepts in Beacon, New York. A recent work, Utility of Obsession: All Things Orange, an installation which kinetic sculpture and video was shown at the Branchville Gallery Outdoor Project Space in Ridgefield, CT. They have recently adopted the name BOX 1035 and have relinquished their physical address in the US in favor of a post office box. They will be doing international residencies in Europe, Asia and the US for the next several years.
